Facts About Lightning:

  • Lightning strikes the U.S. an estimated 25 million times each year.
  • Lightning can spread out some 60 feet after striking the earth.
  • Each spark of lightning can soar to temperatures of 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Any given bolt of lightning can contain 100 million electrical volts.
  • Every year, about 200 people are killed and 700 people are injured by lightning. Due to inaccuracies in the medical reporting process, it is estimated that the ACTUAL number of deaths and injuries related to lightning may be 5,000 per year.
  • A storm can generate lightning that can injure or kill even when it is ten miles away.
  • Lightning travels 90,000 miles per second.
  • Lightning does strike more than once in the same location. The Empire State Building has an average of 24-30 strikes a year.
