Each year, an average of 150 people are reported killed by lightning and more than 700 injured. Due to inaccuracies in the medical reporting process of lightning-related incidents, it is estimated that the actual number of of lightning-related deaths and injuries may be 5,000 per year.

Assessing Your Risk

No one can predict when and where lightning will strike.  To perform the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Risk Assessment, answer the following questions.  Based on your answers, this assessment will evaluate how individual factors affect your need for lightning protection.  This is the only tool used by the lightning protection industry to determine risk factors.

Look at the map below for the Lightning Flash Density over the past year.  Locate your area and answer Question #1.
